Forklift Truck Pre-Shift Checks

Forklift Truck Pre-Shift Checks

It is recommended that pre-shift checks are carried out daily before you start operating a forklift. This is to make sure the forklift is up to the tasks you are using / needing it for, it is also there for your own safety.

Your forklift check should include the following:

  • Damage to tyres and rims, i.e. nails, cuts and other signs of wear and tear.
  • Tyre pressure (if fitted with pneumatic tyres).
  • Tightness and security of wheel nuts/bolts.
  • Testing of the brakes; parking brake, service brakes and steering gear to ensure they are working correctly.
  • Inspect fuel, water, engine and transmission oil levels.
  • Examination of the batteries to make sure they are sufficiently topped up with water, charged and corrosion / leak free, the charger is turned off, disconnect the charger lead  and stored correctly, and the battery retention device is in place.
  • Carry out a test of systems for lifting, tilting and manipulation, including attachments to ensure they are functioning correctly.
  • Complete a visual inspection of hydraulic systems to check for any leaks or damage and hydraulic fluid levels are right when the forks are in the parked position.
  • Condition and security of the overhead guard and load back-rest extension.
  • Forks wear and tear, especially look for cracks on the heels and mounting hooks, bent or damaged fork tips and absent or damaged fork positioning locks.
  • Carry out checks on chains used for secure anchor pins, fixing bolts, damaged or elongated links, contamination (including rust) and lubrication.
  • Complete a functional test of warning signals and safety features, e.g. horn; lights, emergency stop, beacon etc.
  • Visibility aids, if they are fitted, e.g. mirrors.
  • Seat – suspension, wear and tear, correct position, no damage, fully adjustable and can be locked in place.
  • Check pedals for smooth operation and that they aren’t obstructed.
  • Seatbelt, not faulty, torn/worn, not caught in mechanism, check it fastens and unfastens freely, fitted securely.
