Forklift Refresher Training Made Mandatory

It has recently been shared that ALL forklift operators in Singapore must attend a forklift refresher training course at least once every three years. This will be a legal requirement from 2027.

The change has been decided at the start of November as a way of improving and tackling workplace health and safety issues. Between 2022 and 2023, accidents by vehicles were the leading cause of fatal injuries in the workplace, with 1/4 of these being caused by forklifts. Throughout this time, after it was investigated, it was found out that 80% of accidents involving forklifts had involvement of an operator who hadn’t undergone a refresher training course within the newly required three years.

There will be more details on this forklift refresher training requirement over the next few months, with this change is not taking place until 2027, to allow employers and principals time to arrange for their operators to complete their refresher training.

“This will strengthen the safety awareness of forklift operators and reinforce compliance with safety regulations.” said the Ministry. “Forklift operators are advised to complete the training promptly to stay current with safe operating practices.”

While this rule does not officially apply if you do not live in Singapore, it is important to follow best safety practises and ensure you are attending forklift refresher training course at least once every 3 years.
