Most operations end up running a permanent core with short term machines around the edges. If a hire runs on and starts to look permanent, we will say so, because past a certain number of months a longer agreement or buying is usually cheaper.

Contract hire
Forklift contract hire
Contract hire is for a requirement that has become permanent. Regular customers can put the machine, its servicing and its statutory inspections together as a contract, in one monthly payment.

Asset finance
Lease purchase: spread the cost and own the machine
Asset finance lets you pay for a machine in monthly instalments instead of all at once. With lease purchase, also called hire purchase, the machine becomes yours once the last payment is made.
It suits a machine you mean to keep for most of its working life, on work that will still be there when the agreement ends. If you would rather hand the machine back at the end, an operating lease or contract hire suits you better. If the work has an end date, hire is the better fit.

Because you will own the machine, its capital cost normally qualifies for capital allowances once it is in use, though the interest does not. Leasing, buying and capital allowances

| Rent or lease, never own | If you rent or lease a machine and never own it, the machine is not your asset, so you cannot claim capital allowances on it. The payments are normally treated as an ordinary business expense instead, which is still a deduction, just a different one. |
