MEWP Servicing, Repairs and LOLER Inspection

Scissor lifts, cherry pickers and vertical mast lifts, serviced, repaired and thoroughly examined by our own engineers from eight depots, whoever supplied the machine.

A MEWP lifts people, so LOLER requires a thorough examination every six months, not twelve. A service keeps the machine working. A thorough examination establishes that it is safe. You need both.

Servicing, repairs and examinations on access equipment

Access equipment gets the same engineers and the same eight depots as the rest of the range.

  • Servicing. We service access equipment, whoever supplied it, and we service Genie machines.
  • Repairs. We repair access equipment, including machines we did not supply.
  • Thorough examinations. We carry out thorough examinations on access equipment and MEWPs, not only forklifts. We examine machines we did not supply.

That covers scissor lifts, cherry pickers and boom lifts and vertical mast lifts.

MEWP LOLER inspection: every six months

A MEWP is lifting equipment for lifting persons, so the interval is shorter than a forklift’s.

Machine or situation Minimum interval Why
MEWP, scissor lift, cherry picker 6 months It lifts people
Anything under an examination scheme As the scheme says An alternative to the fixed intervals
Damage, a long period out of use, or a major modification Each time it happens Exceptional circumstances, regardless of when the last examination was

The examination produces a report of thorough examination. It records what was examined, any defect found, and when the next examination is due.

Keep it. It is also the document you must send with a machine you hire out, and the one you must be given before using a machine you hire in.

Hire machines from us come with current examination.

For every other machine we examine, and for what the engineer checks, see LOLER inspection.

How MEWP servicing works

A service is planned maintenance: oils, filters, adjustments, wear items. It has no statutory interval and produces no legal document.

  • Set by hours, not the calendar. Servicing is carried out by our own engineers at intervals set by the hours run and the manufacturer’s schedule, rather than by a generic calendar.
  • One visit where the dates allow. Where the service and the thorough examination fall close together, we combine them: one visit, one lot of downtime.
  • Machines from any supplier. Bought from us or not.

We service the rest of the range too: see servicing across the range.

Repairs and breakdowns

We repair access equipment, whoever supplied it. We also run a callout number: an engineer can come out straight away if it is necessary, though that carries a callout charge and travel.

If a repair touches the lifting function, the machine may need a thorough examination before it goes back to work. We will tell you if it applies and can carry the examination out on the same visit rather than booking a return.

More on repairs across the range, or go straight to urgent and critical repairs if a machine has already stopped.

A service is not a thorough examination

Thorough examination Service
What it is A statutory safety inspection Preventive maintenance
Legally required Yes, under LOLER regulation 9 No, though PUWER requires equipment to be maintained
Frequency At least 12 months, or 6 where it lifts people By hours run and the manufacturer’s schedule
Does it fix anything? No. It inspects and reports Yes. That is the point of it
You end up with A report of thorough examination A service record

A service keeps the machine working. A thorough examination establishes that it is safe. You need both.

MEWP servicing and inspection: common questions

At least every six months, because it lifts people. Equipment that lifts loads only is on a twelve month cycle. An examination scheme drawn up by a competent person is an alternative to the fixed interval, and exceptional circumstances such as damage, a long period out of use or a major modification trigger their own examination.

Yes. We service and repair access equipment whoever supplied it, and we carry out thorough examinations on access equipment and MEWPs we did not supply. Our engineers work from eight depots across the UK.

Yes. We service Genie machines, with our own engineers covering the UK from eight depots.

No. A service is preventive maintenance to keep the machine running: oils, filters, adjustments, wear items. A thorough examination is a statutory inspection by a competent person to confirm the machine is safe, and it produces a report you are required to keep. A service record is not evidence of a thorough examination.

Yes. Hire machines from us come with current examination. Whoever you hire from, the report of thorough examination is the document you must be given before using a machine you hire in.

The competent person notifies you. Where a defect is a present danger the machine stops immediately. Where the defect could become a danger, the report specifies a time by which it must be put right and the machine may be used until then. Putting it right is a separate job, and where we carry out the examination we can usually do the repair on the same visit.
