Choosing a hand pallet truck

Fork length and width

Match the forks to your pallets. The two you meet most in the UK are the UK standard pallet, 1200 × 1000mm, and the Euro pallet, 1200 × 800mm. Forks of 1150 × 550mm go in from the short end and run nearly the full 1200mm length, so they suit both: that is the Euro pallet truck and the silent pallet truck.

The wide pallet truck has shorter, wider-set forks, 1000 × 685mm, for taking a UK pallet from its long side and for wider pallets such as CHEP-style pallets, where the extra spread gives more support. As a rule, the forks should be close to the pallet’s depth: too short and the load sits beyond the fork tips, too long and the tips push into the pallet behind.

Capacity

Every truck here lifts up to 2500kg, which covers the great majority of pallet loads. Check the heaviest pallet you move rather than the average: a full pallet of drinks, paper or tiles can weigh well over a tonne. The rated load assumes a sound, level floor and a load spread evenly across both forks.

Wheels and floors

Nylon wheels, on the Euro and wide trucks, are hard-wearing and roll easily on smooth concrete, the floor of most warehouses and goods-in areas. The silent truck’s rubber steer wheels and polyurethane load rollers are quieter and kinder to finished floors such as vinyl, tiles and sealed concrete.

Whatever the wheels, a hand pallet truck is made for level floors. A loaded truck is hard to hold on a slope, so keep it off ramps. Keep shrink-wrap and strapping off the floor too: it winds round the axles and stops the wheels turning.

Quiet operation

A standard pallet truck rattles over floor joints and clatters as it lowers. That matters on a shop floor during opening hours, on a hospital ward or in a hotel corridor at night. The silent pallet truck runs at under 60 dB, so deliveries can go in without disturbing customers, patients or guests.

Care and checks

A hand pallet truck needs very little looking after, and a quick check before use keeps it safe. The wheels and rollers turn freely and are clear of wrap and debris, the forks are straight, the handle springs back upright, the forks rise when you pump and come down smoothly, and there is no oil under the pump. Park it with the forks fully down and out of walkways. If the forks stop lifting or creep down under load, the hydraulic unit needs attention: call us on 01708 861 414.

Electric pallet trucks

For long runs, heavy loads all day or slopes, a powered pallet truck takes the effort out: the motor drives and lifts, and it brakes for you. We sell new and used powered pallet trucks, including STILL’s electric pallet trucks such as the compact ECH 12C and ECH 15C, and for a short job our pallet truck hire may suit you better than buying.

Hand pallet truck questions

Is a pallet jack the same as a pallet truck?

Yes. Pallet jack, pump truck, hand pallet truck and manual pallet truck are all names for the same machine. You pump the handle to raise the forks and pull the lever to lower them. There is no battery and nothing to charge.

Which size pallet truck do I need for UK pallets?

For a UK standard pallet (1200 × 1000mm) taken from the short end, and for Euro pallets (1200 × 800mm), choose 1150 × 550mm forks: the Euro pallet truck or the silent pallet truck. To take a UK pallet from its long side, or for wider pallets such as CHEP-style pallets, choose the wide pallet truck with 1000 × 685mm forks.

How much weight can a hand pallet truck lift?

Every pallet truck in our shop lifts up to 2500kg, on a sound, level floor with the load spread across both forks. Check your heaviest pallet, not the average: a full pallet of drinks, paper or tiles can weigh well over a tonne.

Do I need training to use a hand pallet truck?

No licence or certificate is needed for a hand pallet truck. Staff should still be shown how to use it: pumping, steering, lowering, the load limit and keeping to level floors. If your team also uses powered pallet trucks, we run training for those. Powered pallet truck training.

Which is the quietest pallet truck?

The silent pallet truck. It runs at under 60 dB, with rubber steer wheels and polyurethane load rollers, so it suits shop floors in opening hours, hospitals, care homes and hotels.

How long does delivery take?

Delivery is free to any UK mainland address, business or home, and normally takes 1 to 2 working days.

Can I return a pallet truck?

Yes, with our written approval first: unused, in its original condition and packaging, within 30 days of receipt. You arrange and pay for the return carriage, and a restocking fee may apply. The full terms are on the terms and conditions page.

How do I pay?

Online, with PayPal or by debit or credit card: no PayPal account is needed, and your card goes into PayPal's secure window. Add the truck to your basket and check out, or ask for a proforma invoice and pay by bank transfer. We confirm your order in writing within one working day.
