Every cubic metre of a cold store costs money to cool, so the racking has to put as many pallets as possible into the smallest space, and keep working at temperatures that are hard on steel, floors, trucks and people. We design, supply, install and inspect racking for chilled and freezer stores, and supply the cold store trucks to work it.
The densest systems pay back fastest
- Mobile racking: runs on motorised bases so only one aisle is open at a time. Up to around 80% less floor space than conventional racking, and the most common choice for freezer stores.
- Pallet shuttle racking: deep lanes filled by a battery shuttle, with freezer versions of the shuttle and battery. The truck never drives into the rack.
- Drive-in racking: dense storage for bulk stock of one product, at a low cost per position.
- Very narrow aisle pallet racking: taller racking and narrower aisles worked by VNA trucks, keeping access to every pallet.
What is different in a cold store
- The floor. Freezer floors are insulated and often heated underneath to stop frost heave. Anchors and floor rails have to be fixed without damaging the insulation, the heating or the vapour barrier, so fixing depth and method are planned before installation.
- Steel and finish suited to the temperature and to condensation around doors and docks.
- Sprinklers and airflow. Racking layout has to suit the refrigeration airflow and the fire protection, which in freezers is often a dry sprinkler system.
- Installation. Installing before the store is cooled is simplest. In a working freezer, installers work in shifts with cold store clothing, and the work is phased around the operation.
- Trucks. The racking and the trucks decide each other, and in a cold store the trucks need a cold store specification too: see cold store forklifts and equipment.

Inspection in cold stores
Cold store racking takes the same truck damage as any racking, and ice, poor visibility and heavy clothing make impacts more likely. EN 15635 calls for an expert inspection at least every 12 months, and many cold stores inspect more often. We carry out racking inspections to EN 15635, including racking from other suppliers, and quote for any repairs.
What affects the cost
It depends on your store: the number of pallet positions, the system, the height, the floor and whether the store is already running. Mobile and shuttle systems cost more per position than static racking, and pay back through the cooled space they save. We price from a free site survey. See racking installation.
