Our national cherry picker training courses can be held at any site as this course is designed to have the candidate specially trained in all scenarios while using a Mobile Elevated Work Platform so that they are available to go to any site and use this truck. This course is ideal for workers who may have to use a Mobile Elevated Work Platform at several different sites.
REFRESHER COURSES
Refresher courses are primarily for candidates who already have a certificate to prove they have done their novice course. These courses are designed to be done after 3 years in order to recap anything the candidates may have forgot and to remove any bad habits they may have picked up which may be likely to cause an accident.

Picker Training
Our Beginner Mobile Elevated Work Platform courses offer excellent training that allows candidates to complete RTITB-accredited training without prior experience. In this cherry picker training course candidates will be properly trained on how to use the platform safely and productively. They will also go over the health and safety behind working at heights, going over wearing a harness and lanyard.

What cherry picker training covers
Cherry picker training teaches an operator to set up and use a boom-type mobile elevating work platform (MEWP) safely, from the platform and from the ground controls. Our cherry picker courses are RTITB accredited, run at our Purfleet (Essex) and Chatham (Kent) centres or on your own site, and finish with a theory test and a practical test. Operators who pass receive a certificate listing the MEWP types they were assessed on.
- Pre-use checks: the daily inspection, and what takes a machine out of service.
- Siting and stability: ground conditions, slopes, stabilisers and outriggers, and the platform’s rated capacity.
- Controls: slewing, telescoping and articulating the boom, combined functions, and driving from the platform and from the ground.
- Working at height: harness and short lanyard, overhead hazards, and exclusion zones below the platform.
- Emergencies: emergency lowering and using the ground controls to bring an operator down.
Cherry picker or scissor lift training?
A cherry picker (boom lift) reaches up and out over obstacles; a scissor lift goes straight up. They are different MEWP categories, so a scissor lift certificate does not cover a boom, and a cherry picker certificate does not cover a scissor lift. For scissor lifts, see MEWP scissor lift training.
RTITB or IPAF?
Our cherry picker courses are RTITB accredited. IPAF’s PAL card is a different scheme, and some sites and principal contractors ask for it by name. How long is cherry picker training?
Our novice in-house and national cherry picker courses take one day, for up to three candidates. A refresher also takes one day, for up to six candidates: three in the morning and three in the afternoon.
How much does cherry picker training cost?
Cherry picker training is from £360 + VAT per day, with no additional fee per candidate up to the course limit.
Where do you run cherry picker training?
At our RTITB accredited centres in Purfleet (Essex) and Chatham (Kent), or on your own site using your own machines, which is the most accurate training for the work your operators do day to day.
Is your cherry picker course an IPAF course?
No. Our cherry picker courses are RTITB accredited. If a site asks for an IPAF PAL card, tell us before you book and we will say whether our course fits.
How often should cherry picker operators take a refresher?
A certificate has no legal expiry date. Our refresher course is designed to be taken after three years, or sooner after an incident, a long break or a change of machine.
