Lights and alarms

Warning lights, beacons and reversing alarms

Forklift fitted with amber beacons and work lights

Most accidents between trucks and people happen where one cannot see the other: at the end of an aisle, at a doorway, or behind a truck that is reversing. Lights and alarms warn the person on foot before the truck arrives.

A blue spot light projects a bright spot onto the floor ahead of or behind the truck, so someone at a blind corner sees it coming. Red zone lights draw a line on the floor along the sides of the truck, marking the area to keep out of while it turns or lifts. Beacons flash on the overhead guard so the truck is seen across a busy floor or yard.

Reversing alarms cover the moment the operator's view is worst. Directional alarms are heard close to the truck rather than across the whole building.

  • Blue spot lights, front, rear or both
  • Red zone side lights
  • Amber and strobe beacons
  • Reversing and travel alarms

They are not only for counterbalance forklifts. We fit them to reach trucks, powered pallet trucks, stackers, tow tractors and access platforms as well. Our guide to forklift safety lights explains each type.

In the cab

Seat switches, seat belt interlocks and mirrors

Seat switches

A switch in the seat tells the truck someone is sitting in it. With nobody in the seat the truck will not drive, so it cannot creep away from an operator who has stepped off.

  • Operator presence on sit-on trucks
  • Replacement switches for worn seats

Seat belt interlocks

The truck will not drive until the seat belt is fastened. It turns a rule that is easy to skip into one that is not.

  • Seat belt and seat switch together
  • Sit-on trucks of any make

Mirrors

Rear-view and wide-angle mirrors where the operator's view is blocked. Where a mirror is not enough, reversing cameras and pedestrian detection are covered on our telematics page.

Speed limits

Limiting trucks to your site's speed limit

Speed limit sign on a site where trucks are limited to the site speed

If your site has a speed limit, we set your trucks to it, so the truck keeps the limit rather than the operator's memory.

One limit across the site. Our engineers set the truck's top speed to the limit you specify. Depending on the truck, that is a setting in its controller or a limiter we fit.

Different limits in different places. Zone-based limiting slows the truck automatically in the areas you choose, such as indoors, at doorways, at busy junctions and on routes shared with pedestrians, and lets it run at normal speed elsewhere. This works through forklift telematics.

The limits are best set from your traffic management plan, so the speed on the truck matches the signs on the walls.

Access control

Only operators you have authorised can start the truck

Operator in a forklift cab, where an access control reader replaces the key

The key is replaced by a reader in the dashboard: an RFID badge reader, a PIN pad or a fingerprint scanner. The truck starts only for operators you have authorised, and only on the machine types you have authorised them for.

That ends shared keys left in the ignition. When someone leaves, or their authorisation lapses, they come off the list and the truck stops starting for them.

A reader can be fitted on its own. Linked to telematics, every start, impact and check is also logged against the operator, across the whole fleet.

Pre-use checks

A pre-use checklist wired to the ignition

The daily check moves from a paper sheet to the truck's display, and the truck stays locked until the check has been passed. Our pre-use checklist guide covers what the questions should include.

  1. The operator signs in

With their badge, PIN or fingerprint, so the check is recorded against the right person.

  2. The checklist appears

The questions are set for that machine type: forks, chains, tyres, lights, horn, brakes, steering and anything else your site checks.

  3. A pass unlocks the truck

Only when every question has been answered will the truck drive and lift.

  4. A fail keeps it parked

A failed safety-critical answer keeps the truck locked and flags it to a supervisor, so a fault is dealt with rather than driven on.

Fitting

Fitted to new trucks and the ones you already run

01

Any make, on your site

Our own engineers fit them at your site from eight depots, on trucks we did not supply as well as our own.

02

New trucks

Specify lights, alarms, interlocks and access control with a new truck and it is fitted before it reaches you.

03

Kept working

They are part of the truck we service, and replacements come from our parts stock.

04

Fleet-wide records

For data across the whole fleet, the same sign-in, checks and limits connect to forklift telematics.

Forklift Safety Accessories: common questions

Yes. Our engineers set each truck's top speed to the limit you specify, through a setting in the truck or a limiter we fit. Where you need different limits in different areas, zone-based limiting through telematics slows the truck only in the places you choose.

They do different jobs. A blue spot warns people ahead of or behind the truck, at corners and aisle ends; red zone lights mark the area beside the truck to keep clear of. Plenty of sites use both, and we can advise at a free site visit.

Yes. We fit them to any make, so a mixed fleet can be brought to one standard.

Yes. Tell us what your site uses when you book, and hire trucks from us can go out with the same lights, alarms and speed limit.

Replace the key with an RFID badge reader, a PIN pad or a fingerprint scanner. The truck then starts only for operators you have authorised, on the machine types you have authorised them for.

Yes. With the checklist wired to the ignition, the truck stays locked until the operator has passed the check. A failed safety-critical answer keeps it locked and flags it to a supervisor.

Yes. We fit them across the range, including reach trucks, powered pallet trucks, stackers, tow tractors and access platforms.
