Safety Tips For Forklift Operators

Anything in the materials handling field requires a lot of concentration, and always comes with its own set of risks. This is why it is important, especially as a forklift operator, to follow essential forklift safety and practises to protect themselves and those around them. In the following blog, we will be discussing some of Acclaims key safety tips for forklift operators to ensure safe and efficient material handling operations.

Pre-Operational Checks

Before you start your shift for the day, take some time out to perform a thorough pre-operational check on your surroundings and the forklift. These checks will include looking over the tires, brakes, horns, lights or fluid levels. Always keep an eye out for any signs of wear or damage on the forks, lift chains and mast. By making these pre-op checks a part of your daily routine, you will save time and catch the potential issues early to reduce the risk of accidents.

Training and Certification

Before you even consider operating a forklift on your own, you must ensure you are fully trained and operated for that specific piece of equipment. At Acclaim Handling, we offer certification program to equip drivers with the skills to handle forklifts safely. Be sure to stay informed and updated with any changing safety standards, workplace changes and equipment updates.

Educate Yourself on Load Limits and Capacities

Every forklift has a set load capacity which should always be respected. Overloading or improperly balancing a load onto any piece of material handling equipment can easily lead to tipping or losing control. Be sure to keep the load secured properly and ensure that it’s balanced  so the forklift remains stable throughout the time operating it. You can check the load capacity plate on the forklift to be sure that you do not exceed its limit.

Ensure Clear Visibility

Having a clear line of sight is mandatory when operating a forklift. That is why it is one of our most important safety tips for forklift operators. Always be sure that you can see the path ahead of you clearly, especially when you are manoeuvring in tight spaces and/ or crowded areas. If a load is blocking your view, you should drive in reverse or use the help of a banksman. Mirrors can help you check for blind spots and stay vigilant of your surroundings which can help avoid and prevent collisions or accidents.

Use the Right PPE

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is just as important as forklift maintenance. Wearing high-visibility clothing in order to be seen by others, and using other safety gear required by your workplace. This is dependant on workplace rules, and you would need to as your line manager for details on this if you are unsure. PPE can include:

This gear will provide an extra layer of protection against any common workplace hazards.

Get in the Habit of Safe Parking and Shutdown

When your shift is over, or you no longer need to use the forklift, you should park it properly to avoid any accidents. Always park on level ground, lower down the forks and switch off the engine. If you are parking on an incline, be sure to chock the wheels. This will stop the forklift from rolling. Practicing safe shutdown and parking will help to prevent accidental movement which in turn, will keep the workplace safe for everyone.

Operating a forklift keeping safety in mind can prevent accidents, protect you and colleagues and contribute to a safer work environment. By following these key safety tips for forklift operators, you will reduce risks, improve efficiency and extend the lifespan of the equipment.  At Acclaim Handling, we’re committed to promoting safe, effective forklift operation, and we offer training programs to keep you and your team certified and prepared.

Be sure to make safety a priority everyday – it’s a commitment that benefits everyone in the workplace.
